Mehmet Y. Yilmaz: This is called censureship, and it never works

I have never been able to accept the idea of someone telling me what I could or couldn't watch. Nor what I could or couldn't read.

Which is also why I cannot abide by the cancellation of the controversial "Valley of the Wolves" television program following warnings from the RTUK. Actions like this are called, across the world, "censureship," and they have never, ever obtained good results.

Accepting the fact that people have the right and the ability to chose what to watch on their own is a basic part of democracy. The real problem is protecting children, who are easily influenced by what they see, and not fully mature, and this problem is definitely not solved by censureship. Some of the most basic solutions to this, in terms of television series like "Valley of the Wolves," would be to include written screen warnings for parents at the start of the program, or to make sure the program is broadcast at a time of day when children are already in bed.

Let's not forget: When the majority of the people don't like the kind of series, books, and films exemplified by "Valley of the Wolves," then these sorts of things won't even be produced, since there will be no one to watch them. And if there are already people in the society who can be spurred towards crime by watching series like these, then they will most likely already commit these crimes, and don't really need any additional incentive. Just look around yourselves, doesn't everything already incite these people towards crime?
