Lebanese Prime Minister resigns

Lebanese Prime Minister Omar Karami resigned under pressure Monday, dissolving the government, following a wave of street protests and a general strike, making Beirut come to a complete stand still. Tens of thousands of protesters took to the streets, as a result of the assassination of former prime minster Rafikin Hariri, to protest the pro-Syrian government and demand Syria "get out" of Lebanon once and for all. "I am keen that the government will not be a hurdle in front of those who want the good for this country," said Karami. Karami will head up the government until a newly elected Lebanese government is formed. The resignation comes amongst mounted pressure from the U.S., France and Britain with regards to anti-Israeli sentiment. The Syrian government has been warned to stop hosting terrorist groups such as Hamas, Islamic Jihad and Lebanese Shia group Hizbullah. The U.S has also been pressing for the 14,000 Syrian troops presently stationed in Lebanon to pull out. Many of the opposition leaders are drawing comparisons to the uprising in the Ukraine, where protests forced the government to call a new election following accusations of corruption. Â
