Yesterday in Ankara, the Israeli Ambassador to Turkey, Pinhas Avivi, made a visit to the ruling Justice and Development (AKP) Party headquarters, in an effort to start mending tension that has arisen between Turkey and Israel in the wake of the Hamas delegation visit to Ankara. Avivi met for almost an hour with Deputy head of the AKP, Sabas Disli, and Akif Gulle. The focus of the meeting was the diplomatic crisis stirred up this week by Halit Meshaad's meeting with Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul and other members of the ruling AKP.
Avivi said afterwards that the Israeli government had rejected offers of meetings on Hamas to take place in the Turkish Foreign Ministry buildings, explaining "If we had met in the Foreign Ministry, we would have been formally accepting a Hamas which has not embraced the ideas of 'recognizing Israel and giving up armed violence.' "
