The General Staff made a statement full of strong warnings at 23:10 last night, following the first round of the presidential elections. The main points made in the statement that shook the capital were as follows:

Haberin Devamı

It has been observed that certain circles who have been working ceaselessly to wear away the main values, most notably that of secularism, of the Republic of Turkey, have in recent times, intensified their efforts to do so.

The concerned parties have been warned

These activities range from attempts at questioning and changing the core values of the Republic, to arranging alternative ‘celebrations’ to national festivals which have always been a symbol of the independence, unity and solidarity of our nation.

Challenging the state Those organising these activities are not afraid to exploit the religious beliefs of our people, and are attempting to hide their increasing efforts to undermine the state behind the guise of religion.

An example of this is the organisation of a Koran reading competition on the same day as the National Sovereignty and Children’s Festival on 23rd April, which was cancelled as a result of pressure from the media and general public opinion. Many such examples can be found, including similar religious sermons in educational establishments. The aim of the organisers of such ‘celebrations’ are very clear.

We will display our attitude if need be

The questioning of secularity has been the main outcome of the presidential elections in latter days. The Turkish Armed Forces have been apprehensively observing this situation. It must not be forgotten that the Turkish Armed Forces is a party in these discussions and is a strict defender of secularism. In addition to this, the TAF is opposed to the negative discussions taking place, and will openly display its attitude if the occasion arises. There should be no doubt in anybody’s mind in this regard.
