Yesterday, at special request from Danish State Television, Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul made some statements in reference to the tension in the Islamic world over the caricatures of Mohammed published in the Danish Jyllands-Post newspaper. Gul's statements came after a request from the television producer was followed up by a telephone call from Danish Ambassador to Ankara, Christian Hoppe, who insisted to Gul that a message from him could play an important role in enlightening the Danish people as to the real situation.
fter accepting the request, Gul made a short but succint statement, which looked at the matter from two sides. Noting that it would be very wrong to analyze anger in the Muslim world resulting from the caricatures as having anything to do with freedom of thought or conscience, he also said that the attacks on European embassies and flags throughout the Islamic were were equally wrong.
