Christian Mayor of Arsuz: “World Should Take Me As An Example”

Fuat Sume, who was elected in Arsuz (a coastal district of Hatay) with the votes of locals that are Muslims in majority, is the only Christian Mayor of Turkey.
Having originated from a family that settled in Arsuz 430 years ago, Fuat Sume speaks 4 languages. He said, “We are among the first Christians who believed in Jesus Christ. However, I do not want my Christianity to be brought forward. It is a natural situation for me, for us, for Arsuz and our region. We are secular Christians; we are absolutely not contended to the involvement of religion in politics.
“Some journalists say, ’We would like to present you as an example to Turkey.” I do not want it. In Turkey, I do not have a position to be taken as an example. Because, I was not subjected to any religious or racial discrimination due to my Christianity. On the contrary, I attracted interest. If we are to be an example, we shall be an example to the world. The world should see us.”
