CHP Congress: Live Scandal

Bottles and chairs were swung in the air upon claims of bribery and police teams were called on the stadium where Republican People's Party held its congress to name its new chairman. Seven TV Channels aired the quarrel, live.
Chairman Deniz Baykal was re-elected wiith 674 votes in the 13th congress of the party.    Â

 When Baykal was on the floor, supporters of his rival Mustafa Sarigul attempted to interrupt him by making calls of resignation. Tension considerably escalated at some point. Those supporting Baykal yelled "U.S. outside!" meaning Sarigul.
For 2.5 hours , Deniz Baykal announced from papers in his hand, his bribery and corruption claims about Sarigul.  Â

After fierce fights, Rapid Forces rushed to the stadium , to separate supporters of Baykal and Sarigul from each other.Â
Zaman daily's reporters Mehmet Kaman and Ali Unal were wounded on their head during the fights in the hall.   .   Â
Turhan Tuysuz slapped the Council Chairman Sinasi Oktem who did not give permisison to Sarigul to speak from the floor. The Sarigul supporters then chanted slogans saying "Thief Sinasi!" and the ones supporting Baykal chanted "Bandit Mustafa!"Â
The Ahmet Taner Kislalı Stadium witnesseed scenes which people were not used in CHP conventions. Delegates attacked each other during the congress.
