Environment Minister Osman Pepe explained the reasons why Turkey didn't sign the Kyoto agreement, which was signed by 140 countries, at the convention held in Kyoto itself: "They are industrialized and the agreements says, "protect nature" to us. We cannot accept this. There is a huge economic aspect of signing this agreement. The earliest we can sign it would be 2015."

"Signing the agreement will cost Turkey at least 30-35 billion Euro. The Europeans tell us not to establish factories, but to be in an economic environment to sign we would have to", said Pepe when quizzed on the subject. Pepe went on to say that there were many other points of interest surrounding the agreement.

Two days ago, an international convention, which aroused profound reactions in the world, entered into effect, The Kyoto Convention. At this historical convention 140 countries signed the agreement pledging their loyalty to looking after the environment, However, Turkey didn't but then neither did the U.S.
