    WEF regional summit meets in Turkey amid global financial turmoil

    The World Economic Forum's (WEF) Turkey summit, focusing on Europe and Central Asia, which comes at a time of global financial turmoil, began in Istanbul on Thursday. (UPDATED)

    Turkey is a leader in its region, the Executive Chairman of the World Economic Forum (WEF) Klaus Schwab said Thursday at the start of the three-day summit.


    "Turkey is not merely successful in the economic sphere but also diplomacy," Schwab was quoted as saying by the Anatolian Agency.


    As a secular and Muslim country, Turkey can establish relations with both the west and the east, Schwab said, adding that Turkey is a bridge from a geostrategic perspective.


    Turkey is situated on the energy and commercial pathway between Europe and Asia, Schwab said.


    Turkey made extremely important diplomatic initiatives in its region and greatly contributed to relations between Israel and Syria, he addeid.


    By establishing the Caucasus Stability and Cooperation Platform, Turkey contributed to the stability in the Caucasus, Schwab also said.


    The World Economic Forum's "Europe and Central Asia" meeting in Istanbul is expected to discuss and shape solutions to the global economic crisisand focus on business opportunities that might arise from the crisis, energy and resources security, Central Asia’s role in the world, and Turkey’s role as a bridge among Europe, Asia and the Middle East.


    Afghan President Hamid Karzai and Pakistani Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani are among the dozens of governmental dignitaries and experts, who attended the summit. 


    Turkey’s prime minister, Tayyip Erdogan, delivered a keynote speech on Thursday. He called on European countries to be sincere in countering terrorism.


    "Including terrorist organization in the list of terrorist networks does not solve the problem," Erdogan said during the opening ceremony of the forum's "Europe and Central Asia" meeting.
