The orders by Provincial Governor of the Sutculer district of Isparta, Mustafa Altinpinar, to destroy all books by world famous author Orhan Pamuk has raised confusion in the area. The Sutculer district has no bookstores in it, and most residents of the district claim never to have even heard of Orhan Pamuk. Despite this, most people in the area claim also to support the orders given by Altinpinar. Following the orders by Altinpinar to destroy Pamuk's works, the Hurriyet newspaper carried out an informal poll among 100 people of differing ages and educational backgrounds in the Sutculer district. Questions like "Who is Orhan Pamuk?", "Do you know what it is that Pamuk said which people are reacting to?" and "Do you support the Provincial Governor's orders to destroy all works by Pamuk?" elicited a variety of answers. While 55 out of 100 people said that they knew Orhan Pamuk was an author, 45 out of 100 said that they had never heard of him before, and quite a few of these 45 asked which village he was from. While almost half of the 100 people questioned in the district said to support the orders by Altinpinar to destroy the books, the other half said that they had never even heard of the directive. To the question of what Altinpinar was reacting to, 16 out of the 100 said that they knew it was an interview with a Swiss publication in which Pamuk was quoted as saying: "Since no one else is going to say it, I will. There have been 30,000 Kurds killed in Turkey, and one million Armenians." A full 84 out of the 100 people asked said they had never heard about the quote from the interview. Perhaps the most pertinent commentary on the events in the Sutculer district came from 21 year old Nilay Aksu, a student at the Suleyman Demirel University in the area. "I read My Name Is Red (an Orhan Pamuk book). But there really aren't any books here. I find Altinpinar's actions ridiculous. Before doing anything else, he needs to bring books into the region, and set up a library."
