    Van Refugees Promise Hunger Strike

    Families of refugees go on hunger strike following the pressure of village headman to displace these families from camp Kirklareli, village of Ercis in Van, back to their villages they left to save their lives. The Akbas and Bayar families, who are presently living in Kirklareli after immigrating last December are settled in the Gaziosmanpasa Immigrant Guesthouse, the results of a governorship decision after taking shelter in Demirkoy Town for a while.

    Kirklareli Governor Ismet Metin asked the 100 families from Van, who have been staying at the camp since January 3, to leave the camp befopre March 1. As a representative for the families, Osman Akbas said the following: "We are being subjected to oppression; that is why we immigrated. Now the State asks us to immigrate again. We will absolutely not return to our village for people to be killed. It is the last straw to go to hunger strike. This is our last remedy. We may die at the hunger strike but we will not return to the village."
