Increasingly, it appears that the Friday meetings scheduled between Northern Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat and US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice will not give the president of Northern Cyprus any concrete evidence of lifting of isolationary measures to carry back to his people. Talat, who will be welcomed officially into the State Department buildings as "a leader of the Turkish people," heads to Washington, DC with the expressed hope that the US will indicate readiness to help in ending the long-standing isolationary measures against Northern Cyprus.

US authorities, for their part, are stressing the symbolic nature of the Talat visit, and are reaffirming that they are "still examining" what can be done about Northern Cypriot isolation. At the top of the Northern Cypriot wish list is the opening up of its airports to direct flights coming in from all over the world.
