The US State Department has criticized the preliminary gas treaty thought to have been signed between Turkey and Iran, noting that the time was not right for investment in the Iranian energy sector.

State Department spokesman Sean McCormack did however note: "The decision about whether or not to do business in Iran belongs to the Turkish government and Turkish organizations." McCormack went on to note at a press conference yesterday that Iran had not proven that they were the "most dependable" partner for such treaties.

McCormack also touched on the presence of the PKK terror group in Northern Iraq, noting that the US believed that the matter needed cooperation between Ankara and Baghdad, but that the PKK presence was also a worry for Washington.
McCormack characterized the issue of PKK presence in Northern Iraq as one which "keeps the administration very busy."
