ERZİNCAN - Turkey’s first cemetery-management program is being established at Erzincan University, in the eastern province of Erzincan.

The framework of the European Union harmonization process calls for cemetery management and funeral operations, which have been under the control of local municipalities, to be transferred to the private sector, according to Professor Erdoğan Büyükkasap, rector of Erzincan University. The school’s new program aims to contribute to this process.

As unemployment in Turkey increases day-by-day, new employment opportunities are needed, Büyükkasap said. Cemeteries, which have been regarded with fear and seen as preventing the development of cities, can be among these new employment areas for young people. Students in the program will be educated on a wide range of issues, including anatomy and the psychology of mourning. Büyükkasap said human resource advisers have predicted that such jobs will become popular over the next 20 to 30 years.
