    United Nations committee to meet in Turkey's Istanbul

    The seventh session of the Committee for the Review of the Implementation of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) will be held in Istanbul back to back with the First Special Session of the Committee on Science and Technology (CST) on Nov. 3-14.

    A relevant document about organization of the meeting in Istanbul was signed in Ankara by Turkish Ministry of Environment and Forestry Undersecretary Hasan Zuhuri Sarikaya and UNCCD Deputy Executive Secretary Gregoire De Kalbermatten.

    The international community has long recognized that desertification is a major economic, social and environmental problem of concern to many countries in all regions of the world. According to the United Nations data, desertification threats 1.2 billion people in 110 countries.

    In 1977, the United Nations Conference on Desertification adopted a Plan of Action to Combat Desertification.


    The Convention was adopted in Paris on June 17, 1994. It entered into force on Dec. 26, 1996.


    Over 179 countries were parties as at March 2002.

    Turkey signed the convention in 1998.
