ISTANBUL - A gunman began firing after walking into the office of the mayor in the municipal building in the Birecik town of the southeastern province of Sanliurfa, TV channels reported on Tuesday. The gunman was detained by police, CNNTurk reported. (UPDATED)

Dogan News Agency said two people were killed and five others injured. Broadcaster NTV has however reported that three were injured in the shooting.

The report also said the assailant was a former employee in the municipality who had recently lost his job after the recent March local elections.

An angry crowd of around 1,000 people gathered outside the building and attempted to lynch the gunman as he was being escorted from the scene by police.

The gunman, Ismail Sener, 40, is being detained at a local police police station, DHA reported.

The mayor of Birecek, Faruk Pinarbasi, said the gunmen entered his chambers and fired, injuring a man who attempted to tackle the attacker, state-run Anatolian Agency reported.

Pinarbasi was injured in the attack, reports say.

Earlier media reports suggested that nine were injured in the attack.
