Turkey's military said its warplanes and artillery units have bombed and killed a large group of PKK terrorists as they tried to infiltrate Turkey from northern Iraq. The military also disclosed the details of the operations. (UPDATED)

Military spokesman Gen. Metin Gurak said the operation took place late Thursday. He did not give any specific location or an estimate of how many terrorists had been killed.

Parliament on Wednesday approved a government request to extend for another year a mandate to launch military operations against PKK terrorists in northern Iraq.

The offensive, announced Friday, was the latest in a series of Turkish attacks against the terror organization in northern Iraq after the killing of 22 people in attacks in less than a wekk.

Gurak said the group was detected through surveillance and most of its members have been killed in the attack along the rugged Iraqi border.

He said 43 terrorists were killed in the clashes with Turkish security forces since September 26, adding 21 military personnel and one village guard lost their lives in the same period.

"Ten terrorists, majority of whom are aged between 15 and 24, have surrendered to security forces so far," Gurak told a weekly press briefing at the General Staff headquarters in Ankara.

He said 168 outposts have been constructed until 2008 and 13 outposts are still under construction, adding 162 new outposts will be constructed in 2009, he also said.
