Turkish President Abdullah Gul will visit Iraq in October, Turkey's Milliyet daily quoted an Iraqi Kurdish official as saying. The official also claimed that Gul would inaugurate an airport in Erbil province.

Gul will visit Iraq’s Baghdad, Erbil and Necef provinces in October on an invitation from the Iraqi Kurdish officials, the representative of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) in Ankara, Bahroz Galali told "Kurdistani Nwe" newspaper, adding that the Turkish president would also inaugurate Erbil Airport during his visit.

The Turkish Presidency's chief advisor, Ahmet Sever confirmed the invitation from the Kurdish administration in northern Iraq that aims to boost relations with Turkey, Milliyet wrote.

Sever, however, said the date has not yet been set, and Gul was still evaluating the proposal to inaugurate an airport in Erbil, the administration center of the Kurdish regional government in northern Iraq.

"A date has not been set, but the president will travel to Baghdad. The proposal about Erbil is being assessed."

Gul said in September he wanted to visit Iraq soon, after Iraqi President Jalal Talabani, himself a Kurd, reiterated his invitation to the Turkish president during their meeting in New York on the sidelines of a session of the U.N. General Assembly.

Turkey has intensified its campaign to crackdown on the terror organization, PKK, and parliament last week extended the mandate given to the military to carry out cross border operations in northern IraqTurkey has long blamed the Kurdish regional administration in northern Iraq for supporting the PKK and refused to hold contacts.

Nechirvan Barzani, the prime minister of the Kurdish regional administration in northern Iraq, will visit Turkey in the coming days in response to an official invitation, Iraqi Kurdish media reported on Sunday.

Turkey has been considering an invitation to Barzani to discuss the possible measures that can be taken in fight against the terror organization, PKK.

Turkey's decision to invite Barzani came after 17 soldiers were killed in a PKK attack on Oct 3.
