Bird flu has hit the poultry market in Turkey, a sector which has grown over to over 2.5 billion YTL annually, or over one million tons of meat. Foremost producers of chicken and turkey meat in the country are Pinar Meats and Banvit, both of which have issued statements in the wake of the discovery of birds infected with the bird virus in Manyas, at the center of Turkey's poultry farm region. "I can say with peace of mind that there is no risk in our products," said the General Manager of Pinar Meats, Zeki Ilgaz.

"It was known, after the discovery of bird flu in Russia, that in the fall, with the bird migrations, the virus could come to Turkey. Turkey is a stop on the route of birds migrating south....we knew that there would be a risk. But we are checking and controlling our products every step of the way...Over the past few months, we had stepped up security and hygiene in our bird cages to the highest levels. We use sterilization at every step of the way."
