The Turkish General Staff gave Monday a detailed briefing on the military's ongoing fight against terrorism to members of the Council of Ministers.

"Today's meeting was extremely fruitful to review measures taken to fight against terrorism and to take additional measures," Turkish Government Spokesman and Deputy Prime Minister Cemil Cicek said after the Council of Ministers meeting chaired by Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan.

Cicek said the chief of General Staff, Gen. Ilker Basbug, and several commanders attended the evaluation meeting where the Council of Ministers was informed about internal security operations.

Basbug was the first chief of General Staff to ever attend a cabinet meeting.

"Unfortunately, terrorism for a long time continues to be one of the most important agenda topics of Turkey. Terrorism is at the same time the problem of the region and the world," Cicek said.

He said terrorism was a problem of the Turkish Republic, and added that all institutions of the Turkish state shared the same determination in the fight against terrorism, denying claims that some of institutions held differing opinions on the matter.

Cicek also said the Turkish government had no issues with the people living in the north of Iraq.

"I can gladly say that there are no armies in the world, except the Turkish army, that staged such operations that resulted in no loss of civilians," he said, adding that there was no change in Turkey's policy regarding territorial integrity and stability of Iraq.

Turkey, provided with intelligence by the United States, has stepped up its campaign to crackdown on the PKK both inside Turkey and in northern Iraq, after the terror organization increased its attacks on Turkish soldiers, as well as civilians.
