The World Bank's chief official for Turkey said Tuesday the country's economy was far more resilient than ever.

"Turkey is a different country than it used to be when the 2001 economic hit it. The country is standing on stronger ground when compared to the 2001 crisis," Ulrich Zachau told a London conference on Turkey' banking system.

The World Bank official however warned that a global financial turmoil could have a negative effect on Turkey as it needs foreign investment inflow at a time of deteriorating capital movements.

Zachau said Turkey's main shares index, the Istanbul Stock Exchange, had received fallout from the global crisis but that the damage had remained limited.
