Hürriyet can reveal that the recent UN meeting had the Turkish side use their leverage to help redefine the term “terrorism” on the draft, claiming that it affects not only civilians but also military forces. Talking to Hürriyet, Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdullah Gül said: “The initial draft only had civilians as victims of terrorism. Even the US backed this definition, but we argued against it. We asked, ‘Do you think Pentagon people were less of a victim than the Twin Towers people?’ They were convinced afterwards. In the end, they gave us their support and the draft was changed.”  “We are having minefields in the Southeastern Turkey,” went of Gül, “and many of our soldiers are losing their lives. Isn’t this terrorism? We were quite insistent in the negotiations. The definition now includes civilians and military people as well.”
