Turkey's Minister of Energy Hilmi Guler said on Friday that Turkey has submitted a proposal to the United States to drill jointly for oil and natural gas in neighbouring Iraq. Speaking after flying in from the US, Guler said he had discussed the issue with US officials in Washington. "We have informed them of our proposal to work jointly in Iraq," he told reporters at the airport. "They will evaluate this proposal."

He did not give any other details.

In November 2005, Foreign Trade Minister Kursad Tuzmen said Turkey and Iraq had agreed to start talks on joint oil production in fields in the region of Gharraf in southern Iraq.

Turkey has been keen to boost economic cooperation with Iraq, one of its principal trade partners before the 1991 Gulf War, to make up for huge losses inflicted by the international trade sanctions slapped after on its neighbour.
