Turkey yesterday celebrated the 84th anniversary of the August 30 Victory, in combination with the officially recognized Turkey Armed Forces Day. The first commemorative ceremonies took place in Ankara, at Ataturk's masoleum, the Anitkabir.

Celebrations also took place in Northern Cyprus (KKTC). Top military officials such as Commander of the Turkish Armed Forces, General Yasar Buyukanit, and Commander of the Army, General Ilker Basbug, were on hand yesterday in Ankara for the ceremonies, placing red and white carnation wreaths on Ataturk's Anitkabir. General Buyukanit read aloud to ceremony participants from the visitors' book at the Anitkabir.

Marches in honor of the day also took place on Istanbul's Istiklal Caddesi, winding up in the central Taksim Square.
