“For the last two days I have been attending the panel entitled, “Future of Turkey, Germany, and EU” organized by the German Foreign Ministry and Embassy. In the meeting, I saw once again that the Turco-German relations are too much complicated and vital. I understood that Turkey cannot fully grasp the importance of the German public opinion in her bid for EU.

“A young lady from the Turkish Foreign Ministry – Aylin Sekizkok – said that Turkey and Germany has a bilateral foreign trade volume of 13 billion Euros annually. There are about 1100 Turco-German enterprises in Turkey. The share of Germany in Turkey’s total exports is 17% and in total imports, this number is 14%! Up to now, Germans invested 4 billion Euro in Turkey and Turks invested 6 billion Euro in Germany.

“…In the panel, almost everyone shared the view that Germany stands at a more remote distance to PKK relative to past. Moreover, the pace of Turkey in passing the reform packages from Parliament was frequently mentioned. However our German friends warned us about one issue: Nowadays the German public opinion has started to stress the issue of cultural identity. Do Turks belong to Europe? Germans are said to take a look at the Turks living beside them and think to a great extent that Turks do not belong to Europe. It is uncertain, what kind of a policy Turkey pursues on this issue!”
