The President of Turkish republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) Mehmet Ali Talat met with Turkish Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul in Ankara on Wednesday ahead of his planned trip to the US. Both officials urged the US administration and the United Nations to take action towards a solution over the division of Cyprus. "The United Nations has a duty to resume negotiations for settlement of the Cyprus problem," Talat told reporters.

"Now is the time to take new steps for a comprehensive settlement," Gül said after a two-hour meeting with the TRNC President in Ankara. Talat will travel to the US and meet with U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice in Washington on Friday.

While in the US Talat will also meet with U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan, the author of a reunification plan for Cyprus that collapsed last year after it was rejected by Greek Cypriots in a referendum. Turkish Cypriots overwhelmingly voted in support of the plan.

"The UN can put pressure on the Greek Cypriot side to return to the negotiating table," Talat said.
