The shores of the Bosphorus almost lost one its most famous landmarks, Dolmabahce Palace, on Tueday when a Liberian-registered tanker carrying 86,000 tons of kerosene experienced a technical failure. The tanker 243 meters in length started drifting towards the palace after its rudder stopped working, but stopped 50 meters short of the Ottoman palace. "We escaped a big disaster," Salih Orakci, head of Istanbul's coastal safety management, told Anatolia news agency. He said the vessel posed no environmental danger.

It managed to stop just short of the palace, with the help of its anchors and specialized teams from the coastal safety department, a spokeswoman for the authority told AFP.

"There is no security problem at the moment," spokeswoman Bahriye Yilmaz said.
