Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, in New York for the United Nations Summit of World Leaders, met for an hour with Iraqi President Jelal Talabani. The meeting, which took place in the United Nations building, dealt with the general situation in Iraq and the specific problem of the PKK presence in Northern Iraq. Speaking with reporters following the meeting, Talabani said "We condemn the terrorist PKK organization. The war against Turkey is also against the interests of the Kurdish people. We are ready to cooperate with Turkey, and will do our best to help." Talabani was reminded by reporters of a recent statement he had made indicating that he wished US forces would stay in his country to protect Iraq from some of its neighboring countries. When queried as to whether Turkey might be on this list of countries from which Iraq needed protection, Talabani answered "not a Turkey in which Erdogan is prime minister."
