ISTANBUL - Swedish Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt, whose country prepares to assume the European Union rotating presidency, said on Tuesday that they fully support Turkey's EU accession process, during his visit to the country.

Turkey's place is in European Union, said Reinfeldt, who is paying a visit to Turkey upon invitation by Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan, while he toured Kulu town of the central province of Konya.

Reinfeldt is scheduled to meet President Abdullah Gul and Erdogan on Tuesday to discuss Turkey’s candidacy to join the Union. Stockholm backs eventual Turkish membership in the bloc.

Sweden will take over the six-month EU presidency in the second half of the year.

Negotiations that began in 2005 to bring Turkey into the bloc have been overshadowed by bickering over human rights issues and Ankara’s refusal to recognize Cyprus.
