Two suspected members of the outlawed terrorist group, the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), were picked up on Saturday in Istanbul with nearly six kilograms of explosives and weapons that were likely to be used in a terrorist attack, said Turkish security forces on Monday. "The suspects were in possession of 5.7 kilograms of plastic explosives with detonators, and were apparently preparing to launch bomb attacks," read a police statement.

The PKK, is considered a terrorist group by Ankara, the US and the European Union. A bloody war has raged in the southeast of Turkey since 1984, which the Turks say killed over 30,000 people.

A recent upsurge in violence has been on the increase due to the end of a five-year unilateral ceasefire last year.
