MARMARIS - The missing statue of a U.S. astronaut was found yesterday, a day after it went missing, when local fishermen saw its head sticking out of the water 300 meters into the sea.

The Naval police went to the region and pulled it ashore. It was reported that the statues two arms were severed from the elbow down.

The statue of American astronaut Jim Reilly, was erected in the Marmaris Marina in 1998. Reilly’s statue was made by Rahmi Atalay of Ankara University. Based on the assumption the astronaut’s likeness had been set adrift, divers unsuccessfully scoured the surrounding coastline Sunday. Despite the outcry, there was criticism that the depiction looked more like that of a diver than an astronaut.

The fiberglass statue of Reilly was erected in Marmaris in honor of Reilly after he took the Turkish flag with him into space in November 1997.

Efforts by the Daily News to reach Reilly at his current workplace in the U.S. state of Colorado were unsuccessful.
