A letter written by Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan to United Nations, NATO, and Islamic Conference Organization member countries' leaders in response to the growing tension over the Danish caricatures, has elicited a negative response from some Europeans.

Dutch politician Jozias Van Aartsen, a leader of the coalition party VVD, has said commented on the letter, saying "If Erdogan thinks he can preach to us like this, it will be very difficult for Turkey to become a member of the EU." Aartsen, who made these comments in an interview with Dutch magazine Elsevier, is known for his stance against immigrants to the Netherlands.

Meanwhile, the Turkish New Anatolian magazine published an article noting that some Western diplomats in Ankara had expressed surprise over Erdogan's letter, saying "We want to see Turkey displaying a European approach when it talks."
