The murder Sunday of Priest Andres Santoro in Trabzon's Santa Maria Catholic church has exposed a dire lack of security in this Black Sea city. In addition to this weekend's murder of the priest, Trabzon has experienced a series of violent events which underscore the need for greater care for public safety.

Public lynching attempts by prisoner support group TAYAD, a growing mafia presence throughout the city, and last week's strafing of one of Trabzon's most famous football players' cars and businesses are just a few of the incidents overshadowing daily life these days. And despite the statement by Trabzon Governor Huseyin Yavuzdemir that it was Priest Santoro's "missionary activities" which made his death news in the media, the church where Priest Santoro worked was not protected by a single policeman. The short-sightedness of Governor Yavuzdemir's actions in not protecting area citizens better from crime and discord is currently the target of major criticism within Turkey.
