“…It was not surprising that the bravest statements in the summit meetings of the Organization for Islamic Conference (OIC) in Malaysia came from Turkey. For instance President Ahmet Necdet Sezer openly called on OIC to renovate and reform itself by saying, “It is time for us to review our garden and do our homework. We should find ways to avoid remaining backward. Either we question ourselves in a way to take bold decisions and promote the Islam world or we will not do our homework and be contended with what we have today.” What is today’s position of the Islam world? Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul described it in his speech in a very polite way. “Gul said, “From time to time today’s Moslem societies undergo some difficulties in tackling universal developments in technology, science, economy, and politics and they have not been able to attain the highest standards in democracy, equality, and social rights.”…It is important that the representative of a political party, which has Islamist roots, tells other Islam countries in OIC that democracy and Islam can co-exist and cites Turkey as the model of this proposition.“The messages of Gul were revolutionary in terms of the organization they were addressed to. However, one important flaw of his speech was that, it did not answer the question of what is the key, which differentiated Turkey from other Islam countries. The speech referred to almost all universal values but skipped secularism. Is it not the different course opened for Turkey among other Islam countries by secularism that grants the self-confidence to the Turkish Foreign Minister to give those messages to his colleagues?”
