Sources are reporting that a second wave of bird flu cases is approaching Turkish borders carried by birds flying over Russia and Iran. According to the Russian ITAR TASS news agency, around 5,000 birds along the Iran-Azeri border died after catching a deadly virus from migrating birds this past weekend. Authorities in Tehran are reportedly working to identify the strain of virus responsible for the mass bird deaths in the west of the country.

Meanwhile, Russia is reporting that the bird flu, which was previously limited to the Tula region around 400 kilometers outside of Moscow, has been seen as far south as the Black Sea shores, in Tambov, Chalyabinsk, Rostov, and Altay. These latest findings show that precautions taken by the Russian Agricultural Ministry were not in fact as effective as had been hoped.
