Schroeder's SPD closes gap with Turkish votes

German Prime Minister Gerhard Schroeder's Socialist Democrat Party (SPD), which came to power in 2002 by a difference of only 6,000 votes, closed the gap in Sunday's elections against main opposition parties CDU/CSU with the votes of Turkish German citizens. With an estimated 80% of the 600 thousand Turkish voters going to the polls, again an estimate of 80% of these votes are thought to have been cast for Schroeder's SDP party.

Had it not been for the backing of the Turkish community, Merkel's CDU/CSU block would have pulled ahead by a much greater margin, both in terms of individual votes, and in terms of percentage necessary to form coalitions.
