Saudi King Abdullah Bin Abdulaziz Al Suud, who arrived yesterday in Ankara for an official visit to Turkey, narrowly avoided a disaster as he disembarked from his airplane today in Istanbul, the city where he will spend the bulk of his visit. As King Abdullah stepped onto the mobile staircase attached to his airplane, the staircase moved slightly, causing the king to slip and nearly lose his balance. Guards caught him at the last moment.

King Abdullah left Istanbul's Ataturk Airport with Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul, accompanied by a 50 vehicle convoy, a convoy which left the airport and headed for the Ciragan Hotel on the shores of the Bosphorus. While traffic came to a complete standstill on the road to the hotel, there were citizens seen waving at the convoy during the 40 minute trip from the airport. Press members were not allowed into the garden of the Ciragan Hotel.
