Russia’s stock markets are making early gains after trading opened several hours late on Tuesday, a day after suffering steep plunges. (UPDATED)

The RTS exchange resumed normal trading at 1 p.m. (0900GMT) and was up 2.6 percent to 889.1 points as of 2 p.m (1000GMT).

The MICEX, where most trading takes place, rose by 3 percent to 774.5 points. It opened at 1:15 p.m.

The indexes of both the RTS and the MICEX dropped 19.1 and 18.7 percent respectively Monday amid concerns about the falling price of oil _ key to Russia’s economy _ and fears about the international financial crisis spreading to the global economy.

Gazprom, one of the previous day’s big losers rose by 9 percent on the RTS.
