EU Enlargement Commissioner Olli Rehn has once again raised his voice to back Turkey’s EU bid. Rehn, who was instrumental in resolving the October 3 conflict, suggested that the isolation on the Northern Cyprus must be lifted and any promises made to Turkey “should be fulfilled”. Rehn, 43, worked hand in hand with Jack Straw for a crisis resolution during the tense hours on October 3. He now jokingly adds, “I shouted so much in favour of Turkey – my voice is now hoarse!”

“I am not sorry we have helped Turkey jump in. It was a difficult but a historic mission.”

Answering a question on the alleged new criteria for Turkey, Rehn explained: “There are no criteria other than the Copenhagen political criteria. They are what we agreed upon and Turkey has fulfilled them. Each party has now fulfilled their promise.”

Rehn is also adamant that the religion factor is no barrier for Turkey’s EU accession: “Turkey is a secular country where the majority of people are Muslim. The only pre-condition for membership is fulfilling the criteria.”

“There is no such thing as a Christian club.”
