Turkish President Abdullah Gul, in a telephone conversation with his Iraqi counterpart Jalal Talabani Saturday evening, described the recent terrorist PKK attack as a heinous attack on Turkish soldiers and territory, and urged the Iraqi authorities to prevent future attacks.

A press release issued by the Presidency Press Office said Talabani called Gul and condemned Friday’s PKK attack, in which 15 soldiers died and 20 were injured.

Gul also told Talabani that Turkey wanted Iraq to take the necessary measures to prevent attacks being launched on Turkish soil from Iraq as soon as possible.

Terrorists should not be allowed to ruin the positive atmosphere developing between the two countries, said Gul, adding that Turkey had vowed step up its fight against terrorism after the attack.

Talabani also proposed a high-level security meeting between the two states.

The attack came ahead of a critical voting in the Turkish parliament on a new proposal on to extend for another year a mandate giving its military authorization for cross-border operations against PKK bases in northern Iraq.

The PKK is listed as a terrorist group by much of the international community including the United States and the EU.
