Possible delay for new Turkish Penal Code

    31.03.2005 - 09:35 | Son Güncelleme:

With one day remaining until the new laws which will bring heavy restrictions to the press, the postponement of the New Turkish Penal Code is being discussed in AKP circles. The last word on the matter lies with Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan, who is on an official visit to Africa right now.

The late corrections to some sections of the NTPC, in addition to heavy criticism of the law by the press as well as argument surrounding the developments of the law, have brought about the proposal to delay implementation until January 1, 2006.

A crisis broke out yesterday in AKP headquarters when the proposal to change the NTPC, which contains 13 amendments including some to avert developmental pollution in cities, was discussed in the Parliament's general chambers. How the European Union will respond to the postponement of the implementation of the law is not yet known. With Erdogan abroad right now, it is up to the Foreign Ministry and the AKP leaders to decide whether the law will be go into effect tomorrow, or be put off until next year.
