Coordinated meetings between the Turkish military's General Staff headquarters and the Foreign Ministry have focused on the possible dispatch of soldiers to southern Lebanon to participate in the United Nations sponsored peace-keeping force there.

If the Turkish soldiers do infact go, it is likely that they will be located in the 25 kilometer buffer zone between the Israeli-Lebanese border and the Litani River north of the border area. Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan has stressed that if the Turkish soldiers do go, their duties will be based on what he termed the "Afghan model," meaning helping local citizens, and bringing about reconstruction efforts in the region.
The possibility that Turkey would be sending military forces to help on a peace-keeping mission in Lebanon has been discussed since the emergency Lebanese Conference held last month in Rome.
