Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who left last night for New York on the eve of a United Nations summit in NYC, will engage in some critical meetings over the course of his trip to the US. It is expected that PM Erdogan will use the occasion of a dinner hosted by US President George W. Bush at NY's Waldorf Astoria Hotel to remind the US president of promises made earlier that the US would help in the removal of PKK forces in Northern Iraq which are threatening to Turkey.

It is similarly expected that PM Erdogan will request help from Bush and his administration in backing Turkey on the issue of Cyprus, which has become a sticky roadblock to a smooth start to the October 3 EU accession talks for Turkey. PM Erdogan will stress to Bush that the recognition of Southern Cyprus on Turkey's part is a question to be worked out by the UN and not the EU, and it is thought that the PM will request Bush's aid in seeing to it that the UN Security Council launches discussions on the Cyprus report as soon as possible.
