PM Erdogan on Armenian conference cancellation: I do not approve

Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan has responded negatively to the surprising decision by the Istanbul 4th Chamber Court to postpone the Armenian conference scheduled to start today at Bosphorus University. "We are in a democratic country, and as such, it is not possible for me to approve of a decision against an organization which wants to air its thoughts," said PM Erdogan.

Erdogan went on: "The court has made this decision. I can only give my personal opinion here, but in a democracy, I cannot approve of a decision against a free thinking organization. Especially during this period when we are saying 'a freer Turkey, a more forward looking democracy.' You may not agree with someone's opinions, but by stepping in front of them to stop them, this is not the way to disagree. By preventing speakers who have not spoken from speaking, by preventing a platform for thought from even occuring, you are not in line with democracy or freedom or modernity. These are my thoughts on the matter."
