The veterinary faculty at Istanbul University has established Turkey's first blood bank for domestic pets. Murat Arslan, an assistant professor in the physiology department of the veterinary school, said there has long been need for a blood bank of this kind.

Up to four animals can be saved from a single blood donation. Giving blood does not hinder the dog’s ability to play or run. Pets that donate blood are given a medical check-up at no cost to their owners, Arslan said.
