President of the World Bank, Paul Wolfowitz, has said that Turkey's development is crucial not only for Turkey itself, but for the entire region which surrounds it. Speaking at a press conference in Washington DC before the start of the annual fall meeting of the IMF and the World Bank, Wolfowitz responded to a reporter's question about the economic situation in Turkey following its 2001 crisis, saying "Turkey is doing well." Wolfowitz also spoke about Kemal Dervis, the Turkish diplomat and politician who is now at the United Nations, saying "I remember when Dervis went from the World Bank to Turkey. Dervis is a brave man, and he took brave steps in Turkey." Wolfowitz also commented that while there are still big hurdles in front of Turkey, it has experienced success on a level that would have not been easily guessed just three or four years ago.
