Participating in an international book fair in the Swedish city of Goteberg, Turkish novelist Orhan Pamuk spoke to two Swedish newspapers about his relation to Turkey, and the Turkish quest for EU membership. Noting that he had always tried to stay away from politics in his writing, Pamuk said "Writer friends of mine who wrote before me about their country wound up going through a lot because of what they wrote. For that reason, I decided never to write about politics." Noteably, Pamuk said that his words about events involving Armenians in Turkey in 1915 had been used wrongly to try and prevent relations between Turkey and the EU from developing.  Pamuk also said that he thought it was funny that the EU was putting pressure on Turkey for the case opened up against him for his words about the Armenians. He also noted that he was now fearful of speaking about anything having to do with the Kurds or the Armenians as they relate to Turkey, saying "Turkey has now prevented me through this last incident from making free statements on these matters."
