Acclaimed Turkish author Orhan Pamuk has been reprieved from having to be tried for "insulting Turkishness." In a written statement sent to the Sisli Criminal Court by the Justice Ministry, it was affirmed that, according to the new Turkish Penal Code, there is no authorization given for such legal action against the writer. The case opened against Pamuk had been requesting that the writer receive up to 3 years for statements he made to a Swiss magazine earlier this year regarding Armenians and Kurds killed in Turkey.

The case against Pamuk had been opened formally on December 16, with the first hearing left until February 7, 2006. The Sisli court is expected to release its response to the Justice Ministry statement today.
