With the creation of an outdoor dining area in the famous gardens of the Turkish Parliament (TBMM), an alternative to the "retired military dining area" also in the gardens of the parliament, where bearded men and turbaned women were not allowed, now exists. The need for an alternative garden dining area came to light in an incident when Justice and Development (AKP) Party MP Mehmet Emin Bilgic brought some bearded guests to the pre-existing dining room and was barred entrance and service. Following the Bilgic incident, the TBMM garden restaurant hung a notice outside its doors clarifying the requirements for service in the establishment. Just as in any military area in Turkey, beards and head coverings are forbidden from the restaurant. The establishment of the new garden dining restaurant means means that people from every walk of Turkish life who happen to be visiting the TBMM can now eat comfortably in the gardens.
