In Athens, a switch in the government cabinet has meant that Foreign Minister Petros Molivyatis has been replaced by Dora Bakoyani, making her the first female foreign minister in Greek history. Bakoyani's widely-notes success as the first female mayor of Athens proceeded her latest assignment as Foreign Minister Bakoyanis.

In addition to replacing Molivyatis with Bakoyani as Foreign Minister, Greek Prime Minister Kostas Karamanlis also replaced his Defense Minister Spilios Spilitopulos with a Evangelos Meimarakis, formerly general secretary of the ruling New Democract Party.

As Greek Foreign Minister, Bakoyanis is expected to place positive stress on good Greek-Turkish relations, having been a strong supporter of better relations between the two countries while she was mayor of Athens, a period that included the 2004 Olympics. Bakoyanis is also known to be not as conservative as her predecessor, Molivyatis. The Greek press has also theorized in recent days that news of Bakoyanis' appointment to the position of Foreign Minister will come as "an unpleasant surprise" for Greek Cypriot leader Tasos Papadopoulus.
